RABAT, Morocco—The European Union and Israel have alerted Morocco to the threat of imminent terrorist attacks and urged tighter security, a Moroccan newspaper reported Monday.
Al-Ahdath al-Maghribiya newspaper said EU officials sent a report warning of a "very high likelihood of terrorist attacks against Morocco."
The newspaper also said Foreign Minister Mohamed Benaissa received similar warnings from Israeli counterpart Tzipi Livni when the two met last week in Paris.
The newspaper said the EU and Israel have urged Morocco to tighten security at foreign embassies, tourist sites and along borders—particularly in southeastern desert regions bordering Algeria and Mauritania.
Israeli intelligence given to Morocco indicated that 11 suspected al-Qaida members had recently slipped over the country's borders, the newspaper said.
Moroccan, EU and Israeli officials all declined to comment on the report.
However, Moroccan security chiefs who met Friday in the capital, Rabat, to discuss boosting security measures said that intelligence indicated an increased danger of terrorist attacks.
Following that meeting, officials set the country's terror alert at its highest level.
The government has downplayed potential links to international terrorist networks. But security analysts have associated the recent Casablanca violence with a wave of resurgent Islamic extremism neighboring Algeria.
A group calling itself Al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa emerged at the start of the year, the reincarnation of the Islamist insurgency movement the Salafist Group for Call and Combat, but this time formally linked to al-Qaida.
In Algiers on Monday, President Bush's homeland security adviser, Frances Frago Townsend, met with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The U.S. official said they discussed strengthening anti-terror cooperation.
Moroccan authorities last raised the security alert level in April after suicide bombings in Casablanca as well as suicide attacks in neighboring Algeria, including a car bombing in front of the government palace that killed 30. Authorities had raised alert levels in February.
Suicide bombings in 2003 in Casablanca killed 45 people and stunned this relatively moderate Muslim country, a popular vacation spot. Since then, Moroccan authorities have cracked down on suspected terrorist activity, making regular arrests.
In March, a suicide bomber blew himself up in a Casablanca Internet cafe, and investigators later uncovered an alleged plot targeting tourist sites across Morocco. Police cornered four suspects, shooting one dead and prompting the other three to blow themselves up to avoid capture.
